Custom fields
Your own fields on contacts (plan, seats, renewal date, anything), usable in emails and automations.
Every workspace can define its own fields on contacts. Use them for whatever your sales process needs: the plan they're on, seats, renewal date, lead source, a checkbox for "booked a demo".
Define a field
In Contacts, open the custom fields settings and click Add field:
| Type | Holds | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Text | A short line of text | |
| Long text | Paragraphs | |
| Number | A number | |
| Date | A date (YYYY-MM-DD) | Shown in your format, never shifted by time zones. |
| Dropdown | One of the options you define | |
| Checkbox | Yes / no | |
| URL | A web address |
Each field gets a key made from its label (Renewal date → renewal_date). The key and the type never change after creation, so anything referring to the field (emails, automations, your own code) keeps working. You can rename the label. Up to 50 fields per workspace.
Set values
- On a contact, in its panel.
- When importing, by mapping a column to the field.
- From the API (
customFields) or an event (contactFields). - With an automation's Update contact step.
Values are checked against the field's type every time: a number field refuses text, a dropdown refuses an option that isn't on its list, a date has to be a real date.
Use them
- In emails:
{{custom.renewal_date}}in a subject, body or preview text. Add a fallback for people without a value:{{custom.plan|your plan}}. See Merge tags. - In automations: branch on a field (
custom.plan equals Pro), wait until a date in a field (renewal_dateminus 7 days), or set one. - In the API: read and write them on contacts, and manage the definitions themselves at
/contact-fields.
